The programme was launched with the aim of ensuring that European Union funds earmarked for Roma integration reach the regions where Roma people live. Furthermore, we wanted to demonstrate to those managing EU funds what services facilitate the creation of integration projects.
During the first phase of the programme, between 2009 and 2013, we issued an open call for proposals to Roma minority local councils, local authorities, civil society organisations and local communities, and our staff visited the settlements that responded to our call. Each local development project, resulting in a completed application, required between three and ten visits. We supported our successful partners through mentoring and additional support.
From 2014, we worked with local Roma coordinators in ten municipalities, and in addition to submitting applications, our aim was also to create a comprehensive integration strategy based on local needs. We supported the coordinators through training, study visits and ongoing mentoring to help them carry out their tasks as effectively as possible.
More than five hundred people took part in our training sessions, two-thirds of whom were Roma. Around one hundred applications were submitted, and the total value of the forty winning projects reached five million euros.
As a result of the project, capacity for grant application and strategic planning has improved, and the tried-and-tested methods serve as a model for further integration initiatives.
