Under the ‘My Own Kitchen Garden’ programme, disadvantaged families were given the opportunity to take up gardening by receiving high-quality seeds and plant protection products.
The programme’s target group consisted primarily of families for whom home-grown food could significantly improve their livelihood. During the implementation, some 2,890 families took part in the programme with the involvement of 62 organisations. With expert support, participants acquired up-to-date knowledge of gardening and plant protection, and in many cases were cultivating their gardens for the first time.
Notable results include strengthened cooperation between communities and an improvement in families’ self-sufficiency. They began growing a wider variety of vegetables than before and started cultivating varieties better suited to the soil conditions. The food produced helped to reduce food shortages during the winter and also provided an opportunity to produce seeds for the following year.
The foundation’s monitors continuously tracked and then evaluated the projects. In this programme, we trialled, for the first time, evaluation elements that had not previously been part of the foundation’s practice.
