In November 1998, the Autonómia Foundation launched the USAID-supported Roma Community Centres programme, under which seven independent centres began operating in various parts of the country.
The centres, established under the grant scheme, were tasked with providing services to the Roma population in disadvantaged communities that would contribute to creating economic and social equality for the group concerned.
The centres themselves identified local needs and organised community development and training programmes based on these.
The project’s target group consisted of Roma communities, and only Roma civil society organisations were eligible to participate in its implementation.
Under the programme, community centres began operating in the following towns: Nagykanizsa, Kisköre, Debrecen, Siklós, Salgótarján, Ózd and Gyomaendrőd.
